My relationship with higher functions of mathematics is about as solid as my chances of 'hanging out' with either of my two eldest daughters on a Friday or Saturday night, which is to say extremely sketchy - ghost-like, actually. Go ahead, ask me what an "iterated function of Z" is exactly. I shall proudly exclaim, "It is a Calculus formula which produces a mathematical anomoly. Numbers continuously 'loop' back into the formula in a process which has no end." Now please resist the urge to further ask me the meaning of 'Calculus', because my face would then go slack - unable to hide a moronic expression. No doubt, I'd then look as dumb as I really am - a situation I fastidiously try to avoid. Here's what I DO know...

Some twenty or so years ago, a mathemitician named Mandelbrot assigned visual values to these looping sets of numbers. Very quickly, he watched beautifully intricate geometric patterns emerge from the chaos - structures whose parts, no matter how infinitely small, were made of other patterns similar to the original structure. The geometry was found to be "Self-Similar".

An art genre was born

Sweeping alien vistas and mesmerizing landscapes challenge the human visual need for - as I've detailed elsewhere in this site - "complexity", while the esthetics of Fractals tantalize our interest with hints of what are obviously formulaic patterns.

CG modeled fractal formulas give us a microcosmic glimpse of the mystery which is "infinity". Infinity IS a mystery to us because we're mortal and we know it!
